While many people think wild rags are a fashion choice, they serve many purposes for working cowboys and cowgirls. Wild rags are also known as cowboy scarves, neckties, or bandanas.

This square piece of material, generally about 30-40” square, is commonly made of silk, polyester, linen, or cotton. They come in various patterns and colors to complement your outfit. Paisley, jacquards, solids, and cattle brands are the most common wild rag patterns. Traditional bandanas have solid colors and a white or black paisley pattern.

Dating back to the mid-1800s, wild rags were worn for warmth in the winter, cooling in the summer, and protection from dust. Creative cowboys have used wild rags for bandages and dog leashes to scare off wild animals, strain drinking water, and much more. However, today, wild rags are functional and fashionable.

Wild rags are standard for Western riders in many areas, whether in the show ring or working on the ranch. Due to their functionality, wild rags are gaining popularity in other countries, including Australia.

How to Wear a Wild Rag

There are many ways to wear wild rags. The most popular tie is a Buckaroo Knot or a Four Square Knot. Other options for wearing a wild rag include draping it loosely and tying it at the back or fastening it in the front with a scarf slide or pin.

Steps to Tying a Buckaroo Knot

The Buckaroo knot is the most popular way to wear a wild rag and is nice and secure when riding. Here are some easy instructions to help you tie your next cowboy scarf.

    Step 1

Fold the square in half, forming a triangle. Drape the triangle around your shoulders with the ends in front.

    Step 2

Make a pistol with your left hand and wrap the left end of the scarf around your fingers several times. Ensure the end of the rag returns to the front of your fingers.

    Step 3

Take the right end under the left end over your fingers and flip it over your forearm. Pull the right end around. Both ends should be on the left side of the knot.

    Step 4

Place the right end over the left end and pinch it between your wrapped fingers.

    Step 5

Pull the right end through the loop and pull tight. Pull each tail evenly to create a knot with four sides. If you would like the front of the triangle to be at the front rather than the back, place the V of the triangle on your chest, then wrap the ends around your neck and back to the front before tying the knot.

Don’t get discouraged if you need to try several times to achieve the look you are seeking. Tying a buckaroo knot takes practice and patience. Silk wild rags are more slippery than cotton ones, so try a cotton version first to avoid the material slipping through your fingers.
